Back in 2013 I got a call from Radio Producer and On Air Personality, Dan Orr from QFM 96. The call was a request to have a bagpiper perform at 7:00 AM on St. Paddy’s Day. The kicker (beside the fact that Dan’s Band is really good to begin with) was that they had a ringer for AC/DC singer, Bon Scot. His name is John McGill. If you have never heard him with the Dan Orr Project you are in for a surprise! Also, if you haven’t heard them do AC/DC songs you have been living in a cave.
What happened next is that I showed up and played “Long Way To The Top” to a packed house at Average Joe’s on Bethel Ave, in Upper Arlington. Seriously, the place was ROCKIN’ at SEVEN A.M.! We finished that song and I sang “The Scotsman’s Song” to close out my part, again the crowd could not have been better. Everyone sang along which was a good thing, since my voice at that hour of the morning is pretty much still sleeping.
It was all great fun, and something i won’t forget any time soon. The band was John McGill (Bon Scot SPOT ON sound alike!), Mike Brown, Dan Orr, Brian Szuch, Bob Watts and Dan’s Wife, Kim Orr! They are a very good, and FUN Band and if you would like to find them around town, go to Dan’s web site: https://www.danorrlive.com/schedule and get the low down.
The best part of that morning for me was that a girl that I had met in high school drove from South Carolina to watch the show LIVE! When the set finished, I walked outside, and spotted her from across the crowded patio, jumped the fence in kilt (not the best idea visually, if you get my drift.) and flat out grabbed her, and never let go. We got married the following year in Nags Head, North Carolina!! They had called and asked me to lead a group in a parade “float” in what was touted to be the largest St. Paddy’s Day Parade in all of North Carolina. It occurred to us that this was a perfect time to tie the knot, though we only had about 15 minutes left until the Magistrate would close for the week-end.
To make a long story short, the Magistrate also worked at the local jail! Yep! We got married in jail. There is more to the story, but for now I will just add that, Sue was a true beauty in high school, and she STILL makes my heart beat faster every time I see her!
Needless to say, Dan, John and the rest of the Band have become friends for life, and we still play every St. Patrick’s Day at Tommy O’Brien’s Pub just off Sancus at Polaris. If you haven’t had the chance to see us…feel free to stop by and have a great time! Slainte!
